We Are Not

We are not gods, we are men.
We don't live forever.  We don't have the ability
to simply speak and move mountains.
We don't create and destroy planets or stars
or stretches of space at the mere utterance of a word.

We are not gods, we are men.
We will wither and pass on.  We toil at the ground,
sweat at the brow, tears from the eyes, blood from our hands.
We must work our bodies to the limit and the minds to the peak
to accomplish our tasks and make our miracles.

We are not gods, we are men.
We create legacies.  We can be remembered
throughout the ages for our struggles,
our movements, our songs, our art.
We create and destroy lives or land
or sea through our actions, our words, our compassion
(or lack of.)

We are not gods, we are men.
We share in each others' pain,
each others' gain,
each others' joy and sadness.
We divide ourselves, unite ourselves,
in anger and in love.

We are not gods.
We are so much more.
We are the creatures of today,
the historians and accountants of yesterday,
and the dreamers and inventors of the future.

We are men.
